My Story
While on staff of a mega church in Colorado, Paul received a confirming word that God was calling him to a new ministry where his gifts of teaching and equipping could be used effectively. God opened the door for Paul and his wife to move to beautiful Buffalo, Wyoming where he would pastor a small-town community church named, Grace Fellowship. The church immediately began to grow and prosper. Seven months into this journey came a major speed bump as his wife, Lynn, received a terminal diagnosis. Three months and eleven days later Lynn was in the arms of Jesus. Needless to say, this put both Paul and the church in a grief mode and any progress was negligible. He was positive God had brought him to Buffalo, but this was not the way the story was to end.
In this journey God has done some wonderful things getting both Grace Fellowship and Paul back on their feet. Before Lynn died, she told Paul, “You need to find someone because you will be terrible alone.” She was right and what a gift those words were. In Colorado Lynn had mentored a beautiful and wise lady named Marlyce. Marlyce and Paul had become better acquainted as she would call to check in on Lynn. Months later, when Paul suggested the possibility of dating, “no” was the clear answer. Fortunately the “no” turned to “maybe” then to “forever!” God so knew what He was doing when He put Marlyce in his life. Both Marlyce and Paul are excited about their lives together in Buffalo and the ministry of Grace Fellowship.
Paul, as the lead pastor of Grace Fellowship, now does what he is passionate about, teaching and equipping people to discover their spiritual giftings, destiny and potential for God. He also consults and speaks in other churches to see people activated for ministry in the Kingdom of God.
Why I am passionate about equipping the body of Christ!
The paradigm of a local church hiring a really good pastor is a broken and worn out model. Of course, what church would not want to find a really good pastor who is an excellent fit? But it is a broken approach when we think that a really good pastor can do the work of ministry and build the church. That thinking reminds us of a definition of a football game: “22 men on the field who desperately need rest and 50,000 fans in the stands who desperately need exercise.” Ministry never belongs to a few but to the whole Body of Christ. For the church to be effective in this generation we have to cease being an audience and start being an army. Where every person in the Body of Christ discovers their spiritual gifts and the role of the pastor is to equip and activate the people of God for ministry (see Ephesians 4:11-13).
I am passionate about equipping the people of God because it has been so absolutely rewarding to see people walk in their gifting in the Body of Christ and to see an anointing for ministry fall on common ordinary people for the sake of ministry. In many cases I saw as my people were equipped and released that they did the ministry better than I could have. I love to help pastors give ministry away and as a result have less ministry burn out and the thrill of seeing people step into being the people of God they never thought possible. My favorite complements are never the glib, “good message, pastor.” The best complements are “pastor you took me out of my comfort zone and I am sure glad you did.”
An equipped and activated Body of Christ is the way forward!
